A Home Made for Cooking
For the young couple who live in this Happy Valley apartment, cooking is one of the pleasures around which home revolves. In a footprint of just 450 square feet, giving that passion enough room called for a fundamental rethink of the plan. The transformation began with a bold exchange: the kitchen and bathroom switched places, opening the interior to a more generous way of living.
This rearrangement changed the relationship between preparing food and spending time together. A larger living space and a more ample kitchen now give cooking a central place in the home, allowing the couple’s enthusiasm to shape the architecture. The plan feels more closely aligned with the way they want to live, with room for the activity of the kitchen to become part of the shared daily rhythm.
Visual openness carries that generosity through the interior. A glass partition maintains a connection with the work area, allowing the eye to travel beyond the immediate living space. Daylight draws these adjoining settings together, while pale tones and soft grey upholstery create a gentle backdrop. Fine black details lend definition, and colourful abstract artwork introduces a lively, personal note.
The balance is light and informal, with enough clarity to make the compact apartment feel composed and enough warmth to invite everyday use. Its character comes from the relationship between spaces as much as the objects within them: cooking, working and relaxing belong to a connected domestic whole.
At Happy Valley, the design begins with something the couple love doing together. From that simple pleasure, an entirely different home takes shape—one with room for a shared meal to begin long before anyone sits down at the table.
