The Art of Understatement
At Grand Garden, family life moves between the quiet of the everyday and the pleasure of reunion. With two adult daughters returning occasionally to visit, the owners imagined a home that could hold both rhythms gracefully: intimate in quieter moments, welcoming when everyone gathers. Their vision was one of understated luxury, with the composure of a fine hotel and the familiarity of a much-loved home.
The design finds its expression in measured gestures. Elegant marble flooring lends depth and luminosity to the interior, its natural figuring bringing richness to a restrained setting. Across the dining space, art becomes part of the architecture. A sliding door concealed behind an artwork screens the kitchen and cigar room from view, allowing the room to retain its calm while the practical life of the home continues beyond. The detail has a discreet theatricality, revealing itself only when needed.
In the living room, the original flooring remains. Its preservation honours the enduring beauty of an existing material and brings a warmer register to the living quarters. Beside the polished marble elsewhere, it creates a subtle shift in atmosphere—a sense of settling into the more personal heart of the home. Deep blue seating, soft textiles and rounded tables draw the generous proportions into a comfortable arrangement, while broad glazing opens the room towards the sea.
The hotel-like quality lies in this sense of composition: clear views, carefully controlled transitions and details that make daily life feel effortless. Yet the home’s emotional centre remains firmly domestic. It is a place for the owners to enjoy their own pace, and for their daughters to return to something familiar. Luxury is felt in the ease of those moments, quietly held within an elegant setting.
