COMMON ROOM
Following the curve of its generous windows, VSA’s Student Common Room gathers daylight into a calm, sociable interior. Muted greens, soft blue and charcoal upholstery create a restful palette, with the changing view lending the room a sense of openness beyond its walls.
MAD Studio gives the space a variety of ways to be occupied. Window-side counters offer individual places to sit, while a long upholstered bench welcomes more informal company. High-backed booths create smaller pockets for conversation, and central sofas gather around rounded stools whose soft shapes lend the room an easy informality. These settings remain connected, allowing the atmosphere to move naturally between quiet occupation and shared energy.
Texture provides the continuity. Ribbed wall finishes, speckled surfaces and patterned carpet add depth to the restrained colours, while pendant and wall lights bring warmth to individual seating areas. A compact pantry joins the social functions of the room, integrated into the same calm material language. Glazed partitions preserve the sense of connection at the entrance.
This is commercial design at an intimate scale, attentive to the ordinary rituals that make a shared place welcoming. A conversation over a table, a few minutes at the window, or time spent together on a sofa all find an appropriate setting. The room’s character emerges from that quiet generosity of choice.
