At VSA’s Primary Library, the journey into a book begins with the journey through the room. Golden paths wind around low bookshelves and softly shaped columns, turning the library into a landscape of small discoveries. It is an interior that understands how a child’s curiosity often moves: drawn by a glimpse, a colour, a place that feels their own.
MAD Studio brings the scale of the collection closer to its young readers. Curved shelves and accessible displays keep books within sight, while circular arrangements create recognisable places within the open plan. Broad illuminated rings crown the columns, and warm ceiling forms lend the room a sheltering quality. Yellow and grey flooring gives movement a clear rhythm, balanced by generous daylight and the quiet texture of timber-toned surfaces.
Different settings support different ways of reading. Open seating invites company, a vivid blue nook offers a more enclosed retreat, and stepped gathering spaces make room for stories to be shared aloud. Rounded internal windows preserve connections between these areas, allowing intimacy and openness to coexist. The staircase becomes part of this wider composition, with books and seating gathered around its presence.
Extending the thoughtfulness of classroom interior design into the library, the project gives learning a relaxed and exploratory atmosphere. Books remain at its heart, surrounded by an architecture that makes the act of choosing one feel like the beginning of an adventure.
