CANTEEN, VSA

The everyday ritual of sharing a meal finds a warm and generous setting in VSA’s canteen. MAD Studio brings the intimacy of a neighbourhood café into the school environment, composing a space where the bustle of lunchtime and the quieter intervals between can feel equally at home.

Arches establish the interior’s distinctive rhythm. Repeated across the booths and serving area, they create a sense of shelter within the larger room, softened by blush tones, pale timber and gently glowing pendant lights. Slatted timber overhead adds texture and continuity, while daylight spreads through the open seating areas to keep the atmosphere light and unhurried.

The room offers several ways to come together. Enclosed booths hold smaller groups, open tables welcome a more fluid gathering, and a curved upholstered bench wraps around a planted centre. Tiered seating introduces another kind of pause, accommodating a brief conversation or a moment with a book. These different settings sit comfortably within the same material palette, giving the canteen variety without visual restlessness.

Here, commercial interior design attends to the social life around a practical function. Counters, circulation and seating form a coherent whole, while rounded edges and familiar café details lend an everyday ease. The result is a shared room with a gentle character, where nourishment extends to the simple pleasure of spending time together.
